WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (DC Times Online) — SpaceX’s artificial intelligence unit is set for another change of name, with CEO Elon Musk saying he plans to replace SpaceXAI with SpaceXSI. The proposed label uses “SI” for “Super Intelligence,” following President Donald Trump’s directive to change the terminology used by federal agencies.
The company’s chatbot is Grok. Musk’s announcement concerns the name of the business behind it, rather than a new chatbot capability. The proposed rebrand would be the unit’s second identity change in less than a year, after xAI became SpaceXAI in July.
What has Musk agreed to change?
On Oct. 4, 2026, an X user asked Musk about changing SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI. “Yes, we will make that change,” Musk replied. His wording describes a future change, not one already completed.
In separate posts early that day, Musk wrote “No more AI,” “SI,” and “It’s better.” He also declared: “SpaceX is a super intelligence company.” Those statements express his preference for the new terminology.
The naming distinction is straightforward: “AI” stands for “Artificial Intelligence,” while the proposed “SI” follows the wording Trump has promoted. Musk’s statements describe how he wants the company to be identified; they do not describe a technical update to Grok.
Does Trump’s order require SpaceX to rename its AI business?
No. The executive order Trump signed on Sept. 29 addresses federal departments and agencies, not private-company names. Executive Order 14434 directs those bodies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in specified official communications, to the maximum extent permitted by law.
That makes the federal terminology requirement separate from Musk’s corporate naming decision. SpaceX’s AI unit is the subject of his proposed change, while government departments and agencies are the bodies covered by the order.
Trump had raised the idea in a September speech to the United Nations General Assembly. “From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to artificial. So it’s super intelligence,” he said.
How did xAI become SpaceXAI?
The business was previously known as xAI before SpaceX acquired it. Teslarati reported that the acquisition took place on Feb. 2, 2026, and valued the combined company at $1.25 trillion. Yahoo Finance also placed the acquisition in February.
Fox Business gave a different account, placing the acquisition in July and describing it as a $1.25 trillion deal. Those reports differ both on timing and on whether that figure represents the transaction or the combined company’s value.
In May, Musk described his plan for the business: “xAI will be dissolved as a separate company, so it will just be SpaceXAI, the AI products from SpaceX.”
On July 6, xAI adopted the SpaceXAI name and a new logo, and its X account changed its handle, Yahoo Finance reported. That earlier public rebrand is the backdrop to the latest proposed switch to SpaceXSI.
Has the latest rebrand taken effect?
Public branding still used the existing name on Oct. 4. Reuters reported that SpaceXAI’s X account had not changed its name when its report was published. Forbes separately reported that the company’s website and social accounts still said SpaceXAI on Sunday morning.
Teslarati reported that the company had not issued a formal announcement as of that morning. SpaceX had also not responded to a request for comment as of Sunday, CTech reported.
