SALT LAKE CITY, June 26 (Brigham City News) — Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox on June 25 announced temporary statewide fireworks restrictions through July 5, giving the state forester authority to bar fireworks during the Independence Day period as wildfire conditions intensify across the state.

The governor’s office said the order was meant to protect lives and homes while still allowing local leaders, working with fire officials, to identify areas where fireworks can be used safely.

Under the order, municipalities may designate specific safe areas for fireworks use in consultation with local fire officials. If they do not, the state forester’s restriction remains in effect, according to the governor’s office.

The governor’s office said Utah’s wildfire conditions have led to hundreds of fires, exhausted firefighting resources and created some of the most dangerous fire behavior in state history.

State officials said they will evaluate wildfire conditions again before deciding whether similar restrictions are needed for Pioneer Day on July 24.
