LONDON, Oct. 3 (Infinite Headlines) — A dual U.K.-Iranian national arrested in an investigation into an alleged plot involving RAF Fairford has been released on bail, authorities announced Saturday, Oct. 3, The Washington Post reported.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in London on Thursday, Oct. 1, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police also searched two London properties.
He was the sixth person arrested and subsequently released on bail in the investigation, Newsday reported. RAF Fairford in England is a British air force station used by U.S. bombers, CNN reported.
Police said five British men in their 20s from the London area were arrested near the base on Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses. They were later released on bail. NBC News reported that no charges had been filed against those five men at the time of its report.
Counterterrorism policing head Laurence Taylor said Tuesday that officers found no explosives or improvised explosive devices in three vans. Police recovered “a quantity of petrol,” he said.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday that there were “strong indications” of Iranian involvement. That was his assessment of the suspected activity, not an established finding. Iran denied involvement.
Addressing the first five men’s release, Burnham said: “It’s obviously with the strictest possible bail conditions.”
President Donald Trump criticized the decision to grant those men bail, saying, “I wouldn’t have done that.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said many people were “disturbed” by the decision.
ABC News Australia also reported that another British man was questioned under caution. Counterterrorism police said the investigation was continuing.
