ATHENS, Greece, July 21 (World Daily Times) — Police in Athens detained a 60-year-old man after a knife attack near the entrance to the Acropolis archaeological site injured a Greek-American couple in what authorities said appeared to be a random attack.

The Hellenic Police said the attack happened around 8:05 a.m. local time Tuesday near the southern entrance to the site, opposite the Acropolis Museum and ticket booths. Police said the suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Authorities said the victims, described as a Greek-American couple, were taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Police said the man’s motive was not immediately clear.

News reports citing police and first responders said a bystander alerted authorities after seeing a man with a knife threatening passers-by near the historic site. Police officers and an ambulance responded quickly, gave first aid and transported the injured tourists to hospital.

Greek authorities have not publicly identified the suspect in the material reviewed, and no charging document was available in the reporting. Police said the investigation was continuing.
