NAPA, Calif., July 5 (Sonoma Times) — Napa County sheriff’s deputies said Paul Pelosi, 86, was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Yountville on July 3 and referred the case to the district attorney for review, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies responded about 2:30 p.m. to the 6700 block of Yount Street after a report of a crash involving a legally parked car. The sheriff’s office said Pelosi was driving a brown convertible that struck the parked vehicle and then left the area.
After deputies located Pelosi, he told investigators he had hit something but did not know what he had struck, according to the sheriff’s office statement reported by the New York Post and AP.
A preliminary alcohol screening test showed a 0.00 blood alcohol reading, and investigators ruled out driving under the influence, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies did not arrest Pelosi, citing California misdemeanor arrest rules, and said the matter was being sent to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for formal review.
The sheriff’s office also said a California Department of Motor Vehicles re-evaluation referral would follow.
No injuries were reported, authorities said.
The 2026 investigation follows a 2022 case in which the Napa County District Attorney’s Office said it filed misdemeanor DUI-with-injury charges against Pelosi after a May 28, 2022 collision in Napa County. In that case, prosecutors said his blood sample showed a .082% blood alcohol content and that he was released pending an arraignment in Napa County Superior Court.
