LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles has started recruiting the workforce it says will help carry the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
LA28 opened Games-time volunteer applications on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, marking the start of the two-year countdown to the Summer Games in Los Angeles. The organizing committee says it is looking for up to 60,000 volunteers.
Why volunteers matter
LA28 describes volunteers as part of the core operation behind the Games. In its announcement, the group said, “Every great production needs a crew.” LA28 Chief Executive Reynold Hoover told Reuters the recent World Cup showed “the power of sport to unite people” and said volunteers will be “a key part of that experience.”
For an event as large as the Olympics and Paralympics, volunteers help with the day-to-day tasks that keep athletes, officials, media and fans moving. LA28 says the Volunteer Crew will work in eight areas: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology.
Who can apply
LA28 says the application portal was built with Deloitte. People who already expressed interest in volunteering will get an email with next steps, but the organization says anyone may apply, even if they never signed up before.
The committee has not yet published every application detail in the sources reviewed here, including the full deadline, eligibility rules or final selection criteria. LA28 says it will give at least seven days’ notice before applications close.
Where volunteers will work
Most volunteer jobs will be in the Los Angeles area, but LA28 says assignments will also reach other host sites. Those include Oklahoma City and soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.
LA28 says some jobs will require specialized skills, including medicine and language translation.
How the Games fit into the schedule
The 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled for July 14-30, 2028. The Paralympic Games are scheduled for August 15-27, 2028.
LA28 says this will make Los Angeles the third city to host the Olympics three times, after 1932 and 1984, and the city’s first Paralympic Games.
The volunteer rollout is happening well before the torch is lit, but LA28 is also tying it to local civic work. On its volunteer page, the organization says it has community volunteering opportunities with local groups across Los Angeles focused on sustainability, restoration and the wellbeing of venue cities.
What happens next
LA28 has not said how many volunteers will be assigned to each venue or city. It has also not released the full schedule for volunteer shifts beyond the broad windows reported by AP and other outlets: Olympic volunteer service from March through August 2028, and Paralympic service from August through September 2028.
For now, the message from LA28 is simple: the applications are open, and the race to fill thousands of volunteer slots has begun.
